If you’re considering doing a boudoir photo shoot for the first time, you might be worried about choosing the right poses to emphasize your body. While we’re sure you will look lovely in any way you pose, a few ideas to help you get started couldn’t hurt. The best boudoir poses can vary depending on your personal style and preferences, but we’ve selected a few you might want to try during your photo shoot.
What Is Boudoir Photography?
To choose your best poses for boudoir photos it’s important to understand what boudoir photography actually is and what is the purpose of it. This is a form of photography where the photos taken are intimate, sensual, passionate, and erotic. The goal is to emphasize natural curves and show the inner beauty of every woman – or man, but we’ll now focus on women’s boudoir photography.
Why Should You Give It a Try?
Those who haven’t experienced boudoir photo shoots before may be skeptical about its benefits. It may seem like the only point is to make a woman feel sexy, but there’s more to it. Boudoir is about increasing confidence and improving self-love. It’s about helping us realize that everybody is perfect in their own way and that our biggest strength is self-esteem. If you need to remind yourself that from time to time, pin-up boudoir photography can help you a great deal. Now, let’s talk about the best poses to prepare you for a boudoir photo shoot.
Simple Poses to Get Started
Not everybody is relaxed and natural in front of the camera – some may need a bit of warming up before they can handle complex or more revealing poses. We’ve selected a few simple ideas for posing that are bound to work for everyone, no matter their experience in boudoir or their body type.
Hands Fixing Hair
When you come for your first single session at Bonnie’s Joy, our boudoir photographer will do their best to help you relax and lean into the role of a model. One of the best starting poses is a simple yet very sensual and mysterious hair-fixing pose. You stand facing the camera or turn your back to it and hold your hands up as if you were to fix your hair – or you can actually fix it. If you stand in front of the mirror to do this, the pose will feel more natural.
Sitting Down, Head Resting on Hand
This is quite a versatile pose, as you can sit on the floor and lean your arm on a sofa to hold your head, or you can sit on the stairs and lean on them. Either way, a pin-up photographer can stand above you – this angle will ensure a unique photo that looks very effective. Be sure to lean your back a little bit and relax your head on your hand, letting your hair splay everywhere for an added element of sensuality – why not allow yourself to feel like a queen for a day?
The Kneeling Pose
As one of the most common sexy boudoir poses, kneeling is a powerful but not exaggerated pose. It’s not complex, so everyone can do it, and it works great for all body types – it’s an unavoidable part of plus-size boudoir posing as well. The simplest pose would include keeping arms on the side of your body – be sure to relax your fingers, as they can be a telltale sign of nervousness. You can also try crossing your arms over your chest or even fixing up hair. If the photographer is capturing your photo from behind, you can look over the shoulder.
Back View While Sitting on the Bed
Photos where the model is facing away from the camera can emphasize the silhouette. We often recommend starting with this classic – the view of the back while sitting on the bed. This photo will capture the curves of your back and hips, as well as your hair (which will be beautifully styled here at Bonnie’s Joy). For the arms, a position that works well in this scenario would be having them extended to the side a bit.
Lying Down – The Best Boudoir Poses
When it comes to lying on the bed – or floor – there is an infinite number of poses you can try. A good Utah boudoir photographer can make each one look amazing and guide you to finding the one that you like the best. Here are some starting points that can lead the way to more complex positions.
Lying on the Stomach With Upper Body Elevated
This pose is a must-have on every set that has a couch or a sofa. The model is lying on the stomach, with hands on the armrest, so that the upper part of the body is slightly elevated. This creates a flattering curve that gives the photo a sexy, playful vibe.
Lying on the Back With Hair Splayed – A Few Variations
When you lie down on the back, you can try many different poses. Start by splaying your hair. You can position your arms above the head or hug your torso – but you can also simply keep them to the sides of your body. Another excellent idea is to tilt your head to the side – not looking directly into the camera will add a bit of playful shyness to the photo.
Lying on the Back, Supported by Arms
While you’re on your back, try lifting the upper part of the body and supporting yourself with your arms. Tilt the head backward and lift up your knees to add a sensual tone to the photo. If you also splay your hair on the bed (or floor), the photo will look even better.
